In his senior year, John Q. Excelsior applied early decision to a highly selective college—his dream college. His passions were English Literature and Writing and he aspired to be a writer. In the ninth grade, although not particularly athletic, yet interested somewhat in baseball, he tried out for and became a member of the baseball team; and although he had never been in a rowboat, he eventually joined the crew team, and in the eleventh grade, the fencing team. A talented fellow, he demonstrated a great flair for both music and art. Being fairly adept at Spanish, in the summer prior to his sophomore year, he went to South America to assist in helping young teens learn English. The next summer he joined Habitat for Humanity and helped build houses in neglected areas of the southwest.
